Falstaff Magazine 08/2024 - South AfricaDEAR GOURMETS, DEAR CONNOISSEURS! When sailors once spotted the southern tip of Africa on the horizon, it offered them both danger and hope: Here, at the end of the world, rugged cliffs and unpredictable winds put even the most experienced captains to the test. But those who mastered them had completed the most difficult part of the journey. They soon gave the Cape a resounding name that tells of this story: "Cape of Good Hope". Today, South Africa is a fascinating travel destination - even if danger and hope still lie close together. The country suffers from the aftermath of its difficult history, which was shaped by colonial rulers. Until the 1990s, apartheid, a system of racial segregation, oppressed the black majority of the population from the white minority. The country has not come to rest since then. Johannesburg is considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world, and the violence is fueled by poverty and unemployment. Despite all this, the beauty that South Africa offers should not be overlooked: It is a natural paradise with breathtaking landscapes and fascinating wildlife. The Kruger National Park is just one of the protected areas worth visiting. Gourmets also get their money's worth: exceptional wines have been produced here since viticulture began in the Cape exactly 365 years ago. The braai, the South African barbecue, is a real cultural asset! And in Cape Town's fine dining scene, greats such as Peter Tempelhoff ("Fyn") and the young James Gaag cook up a storm. The latter has taken his "La Colombe" to the top of the culinary world. What was once true for seafarers also applies: we can be optimistic about this beautiful country. In the wine section, we focus on German "great wines", while in the culinary section we visit the exceptional French chef Anne-Sophie Pic. And in the travel section, we take you on a cruise.
Have fun and enjoy the new Falstaff!
